The Kinsman Foundation
Areas of Interest
The Foundation makes grants to promote interests based on the charitable instincts of our founders. Click on a topic for more information.
Historic Preservation
John and Betty both were thrilled to participate in the purchase and preservation of the Metropolitan Baptist Church structure by a volunteer nonprofit group who renamed the Portland building The Old Church. Architectural preservation continues to be the Foundation’s primary interest in Historic Preservation.
Native Wildlife Rehabilitation and Appreciation
This interest is fairly narrowly defined to include licensed wildlife rehabilitators and projects or programs promoting public wildlife appreciation. We do not intend this interest to include the preservation or protection of wildlife habitat.
The Betty Kinsman Fund for Arts, Culture and Humanities
This Fund is a part of our general grantmaking activities, and celebrates Betty’s affection for literary arts, theater, and photography.
Other
The Foundation sometimes initiates grants outside its adopted interest areas.
Special Note Regarding Health Care Policy
We have discontinued our previous interest area of Health Care Policy. Although our directors lament the lack of respect for the dignity of the individual and the prevalence of unjustifiable profit in the health care system, we acknowledge our lack of expertise and resources to adequately evaluate proposals to address these issues.
